The problem was that Ubuntu seems to be able to use the USB to see the networks around me, but when I tried to connect to my network either when the router had the password on or off it just kept trying and failing to connect.
Whereas the Asus one gets ~5MB/s I get about 5MB/s with the Edimax one on a windows machine.
Is there a standard WiFi driver for the Edimax EW-7811Un? After that, all that remains is the configuration of the wireless network. I chose TP-Link TL-WN823N over Edimax EW-7811Un because of its 300 Mbps speed, both were available on with similar price. The better option if looking to get a Mac with faulty WiFi reconnected is the EdiMax EW-7811Un, this product has different wireless chipset that seems to work much better with OSX.
